June 2019 Passages

June 1, 2019

Being angry is not a sin.   How you use anger can be.  Demeaning, degrading, being verbally , physically, or emotionally abusive are not appropriate avenues to manage anger.   Remember the tongue can be the sharpest weapon severing relationships.   In the heat of the moment pray.   Hold your tongue and walk away if needed.   Then, when calm work through issues and refuse to let anger rule you.

“In your anger do not sin”:   Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
Ephesians 4:26 NIV

June 2, 2019

If your heart truly desires to do what God has in mind for you, don't worry when you lose focus or get side tracked.  Jesus will redirect you toward your goal.

So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us.   If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision - you’ll see it yet!   Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.
Philippians 3:15-16 MSG

June 3, 2019

Have you ever thought about your capacity to love?   With human power it is very limited because our tendency is to recoil back to self.   Only God can give you the capacity to love with great depth.   Specifically ask God in your prayers to have his power to love Him with everything you have.   Then, you will also have a greater love for your family, friends, and all people.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:5 NIV

June 4, 2019

To imitate God is to focus on God.   Focus on God requires knowing him.   To know him is to be in his word.   Memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to know how to imitate him.

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV

June 5, 2019

There is a standard of living God expects from his children.   We are called to be role models for each other and those who do not know him.   We are called to be set apart and Holy as our Heavenly Father is Holy.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.   Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
Ephesians 5:3-4 NIV

June 6, 2019

Take full advantage of the time given to you.   As in a relay race you are in training to be  changed to reflect the image of God.   Whatever you do it is always an important leg of the race.   As you receive the baton to go forward in the race assigned to you or hand off your baton to someone else, be mindful of God and his power and strength making you well-equipped for the goal at hand; to bring his kingdom closer to His children and you most definitely have an important role!

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 NIV

June 9, 2019

Incapable of defending ourselves against evil, we have to pray and know scripture so each time we encounter it we will depend upon the power of God for our protection and to act as Jesus would.   He is our role model.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Ephesians 6:10 ESV

June 10, 2019

Putting on the whole armor of God includes daily worship of and praying to Jesus, memorizing scripture to know his truth, and your faith knowing that Jesus defends, protects, and guides you in the battles of evil.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.   For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:11-12 ESV

June 11, 2019

The armor of God is a metaphor for spiritual resources freely given from Jesus: His truth and righteousness, the Gospel of salvation, and his word in scripture are aspects of God himself.   With these we are fully equipped to stand firm!

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.   In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.   To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
Ephesians 6:14-18 ESV

June 12, 2019

Faith, Hope, and Love; divine instruments to be used in daily living.   What you do is because of your faith, why you do it is because you love, and you keep at it because of the hope you find in Jesus!

We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV

June 13, 2019

Paul teaches us the value of prayer for each other as we journey on this side of eternity.   Be thankful to God for those who love you for who you are and will tell you what you need to hear instead of always what you want to hear.   Be thankful for those who extend grace, have given you another chance, encourage you, support you, and have your back.   Make mention of them in your prayers as you offer thanks to God for them.

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.
1 Thessalonians 1:2 NIV

June 15, 2019

When God has work for you to do, make no mistake, he will empower you to not fear people and will give you strength power, and courage just as he did Paul.

You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results.   We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.
1 Thessalonians 2:1-2 NIV

June 16, 2019

"So, we speak" indicates the action Paul took as a result of a command of God to share the Gospel.   You and I believers in Christ, like Paul, are approved by God and entrusted with the Gospel - SO, you and I are to speak!   We are to share God's word, tell our faith stories, make disciples; be instruments of God.

but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, SO we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.
1 Thessalonians 2:4 ESV

June 17, 2019

To imitate Jesus is to care so much for your family, friends, coworkers, that you are willing to set aside time from your work, task lists, schedule when prompted by the Holy Spirit to be present, listen, enjoy good times, help, and encourage them.   The key is to pay attention, so you know when you are being prompted.

Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.
1 Thessalonians 2:8 NIV

June 18, 2019

The Psalmist tells us the truly happy person guides their life by God's instructions and as they do God showers them with favor.

How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!    Instead, his delight is in the Lord ’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
Psalms 1:1-2 CSB

June 19, 2019

If your life source is Jesus, not the ideology of this world; like the tree by the stream, you will be extremely useful and effective wherever God has you.

He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither.   Whatever he does prospers.
Psalms 1:3 CSB

June 21, 2019

God, family, friends , strangers are our witnesses for how we conduct ourselves.   Whether on stage or behind the scenes our time on Earth is to be spent molding into the character and likeness of God.

You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.
1 Thessalonians 2:10 CSB

June 22, 2019

The Holy Spirit in you is your Comforter, Encourager and desires you to live your life in a godly way.   Be open to opportunity from Him to take you out of your comfort zone, to be stretched to deepen your faith in God.

As you know, like a father with his own children,  we encouraged, comforted, and implored each one of you to live worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 CSB

June 23, 2019

This verse references Holy Worship to God. We respect our leaders, but we worship God Almighty with exuberance and joy, thankfulness, and reverence.   Our worship is not to be like a task to check off a list or to throw out a casual prayer, but to give of ourselves deeply.

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Psalms 2:11 ESV

June 24, 2019

Slow down.   Let your mind rest in the present moment.   Open your Bible and read a scripture passage and listen to see what is being said to you.   Humility in listening leads to wisdom.

let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.
Proverbs 1:5 NIV

June 25, 2019

To fear God is to embrace and show reverence in all circumstances that he is the creator of you, He is in charge, He numbers your days, and as the Father who loves you dearly, He will also discipline you.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7 NIV

June 26, 2019

Allow God to lead; listening to his direction. &nbap; He will protect you  and give you strength and courage to resist  the enemy  and his schemes:   to stress you out, raise doubt, hold onto anger, give into selfish ways, choose the wrong path.   Your hope in God will allow you to face what is before you.

But you, Lord , are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
Psalm 3:3 NIV

June 27, 2019

A message of human origin is weak and will not last.   But the message from God is powerful and capable of changing you, expanding your world, giving you confidence to do things you would not otherwise be capable of doing on your own.   The believers mentioned in this passage were changed because they accepted the Gospel on the full authority of God.

... when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV

June 28, 2019

Hopelessness, Faithlessness, anger, hatred, and unbelief plague our days.   Allow God to do his work through you to give hope to so many who desperately need him!

Many, Lord , are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.
Psalm 4:6 NIV

June 30, 2019

To truly imitate Jesus is to fully participate in the life he calls you to lead.   This can be hard because people who reject this will make it hard for you by making fun, alienating you, terminating you from a job, or even by violent toward you.   This is persecution.   To imitate Jesus is to stand firm and remember you are part of a great family united in Jesus for support, comfort, and encouragement.

For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus:   You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews
1 Thessalonians 2:14 NIV
